EDVARD MUNCH - Paintings from Norway
extended until February 2, 2005

Edvard Munch’s importance for 20th century art can’t be valued high enough. It can be compared only to that of Vincent van Gogh or Paul Gauguin. Essential tendencies of modern painting up to the present have their origins in the great Norwegian’s work. Munch transformed basic human emotions into ageless paintings whose intensity still touches us, even after all those years.

The artist was born in 1863 and for long years he worked in France and Germany, before finally returning to his Norwegian home after a nervous breakdown in 1909. From this time until he died in 1944, he lived close to the sea, or to the Oslo-Fjord and its coast with the dense forests. In contrast to the constant changes of place and the tragic love affairs which marked the previous decades, Munch here finds the peace to stay in one place for a longer period and to concentrate on his art.

In 1916 he bought the large farm Ekely (Protected by oaks) west of Kristiania (Oslo). It is here where he spends most of the 28 years until his death. The villa is surrounded by a park-like estate and offers a wide view of the landscape. In contrast to the often dramatic or melancholy mood of earlier paintings, the works created at Ekely are marked by bright colours, a light touch of the brush and motifs directly taken from his immediate surroundings.

The exhibition shows a representative selection of paintings of the buildings, the fruit plantations as well as the surrounding woods and fields through all seasons of the year. Fascinated by the clarity of the Nordic winter night Munch creates a series of seemingly magic views of the starlit landscape deeply covered in snow. Besides models, friends and self portraits he frequently paints farmers working their fields. However, also the great subjects of former years keep a grip on the painter: New versions of legendary paintings like »The sick child«, »Ashes« or »Woman in three stages« return to the Frieze of Life, which made Edvard Munch an internationally praised as well as disputed artist at the turn of the century.

The 63 oil paintings, selected in cooperation with the Munch-Museum in Oslo, concentrate on the creative phase between 1916 and 1944. For the first time such a number of works from this period is shown in Germany. The Munch-Exhibition, which will be shown exclusively in Emden, offers new perspectives even for connoisseurs.
